"And the Oscar goes to ...." Who has not felt a combination of curiosity and surprise after hearing that phrase during the glamorous awards in Hollywood?


But finally, with almost 100 years of existence, the award has become one of the most watched television events worldwide. And its symbol? the statuette named Oscar symbolises the excellence of the film industry.


You’re probably wondering, what is the relationship between Dublin and the Oscars? Funny enough, a Dubliner named Cedric Gibbons designed the statue of the award in 1928! Another unique fact is that the famous lion roaring in the clip at the beginning of MGM movies was born and raised in the Dublin zoo.



And the Oscar went to some Dubliners, including playwrights and actors such as George Bernard Shaw, Barry Fitzgerald, Brenda Fricker, and Glen Hansard. Actor Daniel Day-Lewis who is British-born, containing Irish roots was also named Best Actor for his brilliant performance as he portrayed Dublin-based writer and painter Christy Brown in "My Left Foot" (1990).


Among the famous Dublin actors of today and one day, dream of winning such a prize are Colin Farrell, Cillian Murphy, Brendan Gleeson and Liam Neeson, let's cheer!
